Kashmir – let it go……

by Faisal Khan on November 5, 2008

Kashmir. I was born in 1970 – and it was not until I was 12 years old, did I even notice something called disputed territory on our map. It wasn’t until I went to college that I really found out what the fuss is all about. Over the years I have been reading a lot about Kashmir silently. Listening to people’s opinion about the matter (both on this side of the border and across it), and where ever applicable, also from a Kashmiri themselves.

We have been brought to (or maybe it is just me) to think that Kashmir will ALWAYS be ours – it is a rightful part of Pakistan. To think otherwise would be unpatriotic. Well, I’d like to speak my mind. These are my opinions and what I found out – slowly but surely, a lot of people share this too.

Kashmir happened before me – so I really don’t give two hoots about it. I was led (read: brain fed) to believe it is our most important problem. It is absolutely not. It certainly ain’t on my radar anywhere. Never was – probably never will be. We have four provinces: Sindh, Punjab, Baluchistan and North West Frontier Province (NWFP). Does – adding a 5th one make us any better – no. I don’t think so. In fact if we did not have Kashmir altogether, we’d we far better off. We spend Billion of Rupees a year (if not Billions of Dollars) for the past god knows how many decades to wage a guerrilla war, proximity war with the Indians and they do the same. What the fuck for? So we can plan a flag in the valley and say – this too now is ours? I don’t think so.

I don’t suppose a visit to the valley will change that either. Sure, I would probably be blow away by its beauty, etc. but so will a visit to Christchurch. Kashmiris always have referred to themselves as ‘Kashmiris’… I have NEVER ONCE come across a Kashmiri who considers themselves a Pakistan.

I for one say – let it go – surprise the daylights out of the world and more importantly the Indians and let it go. Fuck Jamaat-e-Islaami who will bitch and crib about it. These Mullah Monkeys will eventually settle down. Forget the Army Jawan who has now perfected killing – yes, he will have to be laid off. Lets for once close our borders. The Kashmiris can wage their own battles with the Indian and their law/rule. We have a problem at hand keeping a hold of our 160 Million or whatever the current population number is, what are we going to do with the absorption of more people. More trouble if you ask me.

Let Kashmir go,

Let us concentrate on the problems at hand, which are economic in nature. We keep striking for Kashmir and Palestine, etc. One will get rid of Kashmir – and when it comes to Palestine, do the Arab really give a flying fuck about Kashmir? I bet you they cannot even point their compass in the right direction let alone locate it – and the same goes for our politicians who have used Palestine as a reason to bitch and crib about. This ‘Muslim’ brotherhood we keep talking about is more shattered than the Dracula’s glass. Who are we fooling? I need the Government to concentrate on economics. To concentrate on development. To concentrate on getting a new land-law in place. To work on alternative energy. To start a ‘jihad’ against illiteracy. To have a massive drive to increase our sciences and engineering penetration in our scholastic youth. We need scientists and engineers in order to possibly survive the next 50 years. MBAs and Lawyer movements will simply not survive. As an engineer – I view this simply as BS. At the end of the day today, EVERYTHING you touch is either made possible by a scientist or an engineer. Think about it – everything.

I really don’t want to hear how Kashmir is our problem. It is not my fellow Pakistanis – it never was. The Kashmiris can have their own Kashmiristan or whatever the they want to call it. I would like to just say – Not In My Backyard (NIMBY).

Two factors: First , 1947 division was on religious grounds we cannot deny that. what ever we have done to Pakistan and what ever this confrontation going to cost us is irrespective of the fact that it remains and will be unfinished agenda of 1947 divide till resolved.

Second is there an argument against right of self determination or we have reconciled to might is right in this world.

My morals to look up too are to stand by what one feels is the truth and your right to self governance of your choice. we cant hold or let go on the basis if it suits us or not !

kashmiri leaders have fucked kashmir
the burninig of kashmir brings no good to anybody but a commoner will always suffer. miggration is the best sollution arranged or spontainious people who have left the valley have prosspered & never want to return strikes , hartaals have become a daily feature resulting in deaths & distruction

Dear Sir,
Firstly I don’t expect such a response from a reasonable & equally sensible person like you; your aggravation is prominently felt throughout your blog. If you try to realize the fact & core reason of acquiring Kashmir, then only you can think border. Keeping aside the mineral resources & geographical pro’s this land can offer there is one BIG factor known as humanity & brotherhood which associated us with Kashmir & kashmiri’s “lets call a spade a spade” the history attached for illegal access to this land & brutal record of martyrdom can not be forgotten or forgiven. Closing your eye to issues or diverting attention to others won’t resolve the primary ones.
Further your worries for feeding those addition hands is a concept beyond our comprehension since every living creature born on face of this planet has his own feeding limits which can not go beyond nor can be exceeded.

Cheers Bro...!!

This is a strange blog. I belive you are a first pakistani known to me to say F word to kashmir problem. Mr. khan, I belive your thoughts are not common among other pakistani fellows. please do not say this in pakistan.

by the way I am an Indian. you may hate me.

Let India worry what they will then do with the 600,000 soldiers they have. Let them worry about another state and its inevitable long-battle with integration and assimilation with the Indian culture and laws. Camps like BJP which also entice communal or regional violence against Muslims are no worse than Jamaat-e-Islam or the other fundamentalist political parties we have. My reason for saying it is if you look at history, and I can challenge anyone - unless they prove me wrong, the maps/borders of this world have been changing constantly since mankind started drawing borders. There has not been a single instance in the past 2,000 years where for 50 years (you can even go as low as 25 years) where the world map has no changed. And mind you it will continue to do so, i.e. change/alter. The problems we are facing today, make it very hard to juxtapose groups onto a map. language (read; dialect) is one such element. Religion faction is another. Socio-Economic status is another (where you believe it or not), genomics - as we understand it more - will make you understand this. Food-haves-and-have-nots will be another, and so on and so forth.

We have not been able to resolve a problem after 60+ years, big deal. Today if Kashmir becomes part and parcel of Pakistan, it simple makes our population numbers look more bleak for us to qualify for international aid. Nothing more. Feeding ourselves is already becoming a challenge and if Al Gore has an ounce of truth to his “Inconvenient Truth” then the problem will just get worse. We still have yield-per-acreage problems in agriculture. We still have no sense of drip irrigation, we have not mastered the science of deep drilling for water, or water filtration, or even water stocking (i.e. mini-dams). Yet we are fixated on how our map looks. So myopic is our viewpoint that its almost criminal.

My frustration runs more deep than it appears. Kashmir just happens to be one facet. Lawyer rallies, Political bickering, lack of unity, political agendas, etc. are all such things that do nothing at the end of the day – regardless how you may argue. I keep shouting the need for more qualified and problem-solving scientists / engineers, yet somehow it seems – no one is attuned to my frequency. The resultant path is one I wish not to see.

Faisal,
What all you have listed in your closing remarks as do 's for our nation , cant we do them without letting go kashmir.
second do you feel india would let go rest of Pakistan if let go kashmir. Arnt they out to prove that partition of bahrat mata was a sin and they need to undo it. If you dont agree with this then u havnt met the BJP crowd as yet.

we definatly need to talk on this next time we meet
